The case, which was handled by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in Doncaster, was not an isolated one.
Ms Nilsa Olesen, 21, was sentenced today to three years of community control.
At the time of her sentencing, she was living in Doncaster, suffering from severe breathing difficulties and being out of care. Her case was investigated by the MHRA and a special investigator, who were assigned to monitor her.
The investigation revealed that she had been selling Viagra, an erectile dysfunction drug, which had been on her private prescription for two years.
A spokesperson for the MHRA said: “As a healthcare practitioner in Doncaster, I was immediately informed of the findings of a consultation with a qualified health professional. I made the decision to give a detailed diagnosis, and I am grateful to the team at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency for their hard work.
“I was able to establish a routine of monitoring, as it is known that individuals with heart conditions can have dangerous drug use. It was a delicate situation, so I was confident that the patient would be able to comply with the guidance provided.
“However, it is important to note that the patient has received a diagnosis and there are no known side effects that would necessitate an adjustment in their medication.”
The case began in December 2018 when Ms Nilsa Olesen received a prescription from a GP to buy Viagra for her heart condition in May 2018. The prescription was for a drug called Revatio, which was prescribed for hypertension and pulmonary arterial hypertension. It had been taken by Ms Olesen when she was in her 50s. It was later discovered that it was the Viagra that was causing the distress. It was later discovered that the patient had also taken the drug after she had been prescribed the wrong dosage for her heart condition.
The patient had not been able to find out how the drug was being used and had been given other information including the name of the medication she was taking and whether she had ever had any other health conditions.
The prescription from the GP stated that the patient “has a history of heart conditions, including a history of hypertension. She has been prescribed an erection medication and she has had serious side effects, including a severe allergic reaction to the medication.”
Ms Olesen then bought a prescription for her Viagra, which was being used to treat impotence, and prescribed the medication for another condition.
She told her doctor that she had taken Viagra before and that she had been taking the medication for about a year.
She went to a local pharmacy and bought a prescription for a different medication.
She said: “After I got the prescription I went into the pharmacy and bought Viagra. I went into the consultation room and I looked in and I saw a doctor and I asked her why she was taking it and she told me to stop and she told me to stop and she was going to stop because she had been taking the medication for a year. She did stop and she was in my arms and I thought that was the reason I was going to have a heart attack and I had to go to the hospital because I was going to have a heart attack.”
She was then given the patient’s name and when she saw the name, she told her doctor: “I thought it was a mistake and I had to stop and she said she was going to stop and she was going to get a different one for me to take. I knew I had to stop and she would get a different one for me.”
The prescription was for a drug called sildenafil, which was prescribed for erectile dysfunction in women. It was later discovered that she had taken the drug for a long time.
The patient had been prescribed Viagra and it had been taken by the patient for about a year.
She said: “I told her about the Viagra and she was so excited and I was like, ‘Oh, my God’ and she said that she was going to stop because she was taking the medication for her heart condition.
“I said, ‘Oh, you can’t stop if you have a heart condition. You have to stop.
